Women build: breaking barriers, breaking records, and building homes
Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build empowers women to take action against affordable housing shortages by constructing homes and providing safe, affordable housing for low-income families. The program offers women the opportunity to learn new construction skills, build relationships with like-minded volunteers, and make a significant impact in their community. In addition to volunteering their time to help build the homes of Habitat’s future homebuyers, the Women Build teams help advocate to raise money and support for the non-profit. Overall, the initiative aims to help families break their cycles of hardship and create a world where everyone has a place to call home.
Joined by over 10 subcontractor partners, the team spent the day on Saturday, March 23 helping to build the homes of Calesha Flores and Devora Slaughter. Calesha joined the team in building her future home and is a mom of two daughters who have earned their sweat equity by dedicating hours volunteering at the shelter. Devora has three children who have helped earn sweat equity by laying sod and painting their future home, as well as working community volunteer hours.
