LET’S CELEBRATE CTE MONTH BY EMPOWERING FLORIDA’S TECHNICAL WORKFORCE

Beyond the joy of Valentine’s Day; February also marks the celebration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. This annual observance is a crucial time to recognize the significant impact of CTE on the lives of students and the workforce in the Sunshine State.

STATE ORDER IMPACTING CTE IN FLORIDA

CTE in Florida has come a long way, transitioning from traditional vocational programs to a dynamic and comprehensive system. The emphasis is no longer solely on preparing students for immediate entry into the workforce; rather, it aims to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in diverse career paths and industries.

In 2019, Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-31 to chart a course for Florida to become number one in the nation for workforce education. The Order requires an annual audit of all CTE programs in Florida and ensures resources are strategically utilized and aligned to the actual needs of employers throughout Florida.

These audits have resulted in phasing out over 500 programs that no longer align with employers’ needs and refocus higher education and job training programs on pathways to high-wage, high-demand professions.

PROMOTING ACADEMIC AND CAREER SUCCESS

Through the importance of CTE programs, students in Florida gain exposure to various career pathways, ranging from healthcare and technology to skilled trades and businesses such as manufacturing and construction. This exposure not only helps them discover their passions but also enables them to make informed decisions about their academic and career trajectories.

At FINFROCK, we partner with local schools like Valencia College’s Accelerated Skills Training to bridge the gap from technical education to roles in manufacturing.

Through our manufacturing professional development program, a new hire can come in as a welder for our innovative precast concrete manufacturing facility or be placed in the field to assist our erection crews. Afterwards, they can cross-train in other departments that contribute to our design-manufacture-construct process and may even find a role as a foreman, supervisor, or even field engineer. This way, there is a clear linear path to success, but also the opportunity to forge your own career path with skills gained.

ADDRESSING WORKFORCE NEEDS IN FLORIDA

As the demand for a skilled and adaptable workforce continues to grow, CTE programs in Florida play a crucial role in addressing these needs. By collaborating with local industries and businesses, CTE ensures that its curriculum is aligned with the skills required in the job market. This alignment not only benefits students but also contributes to the economic vitality of the state by providing a well-prepared workforce for emerging industries.

CTE Month also serves as an excellent opportunity to break down stereotypes associated with vocational education and career paths. There are common misperceptions about skilled labor jobs and many people view them as a secondary option for those who may not excel in traditional academic pursuits. In reality, vocational programs in Florida are diverse, catering to a wide range of interests and abilities. By showcasing the success stories of CTE students, the month aims to dispel misconceptions and emphasize the value of these programs in shaping successful careers.

INFLUENCING THE FUTURE OF MANUFACTURING THROUGH CTE PROGRAMS IN FLORIDA

This month serves as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students, educators, and administrators in Florida’s CTE programs. From innovative projects to successful career placements, the spotlight is on the positive impact of CTE in shaping the future of manufacturing in the state. By promoting manufacturing and other trade pathways, we ensure that students are well-prepared for success in this vital sector, contributing to individual growth and the economic prosperity of Florida.
