HABITAT: A MISSION CLOSE TO HOME

“I really believe in the mission of Habitat for Humanity,” Shanda shared in a recent discussion. “Working full-time and still not being able to afford housing is a real challenge that we need to address. The way Habitat does this—empowering individuals through education, accountability, and community— doesn’t just build leaders but builds community leaders who are actively involved.”

Shanda expressed her excitement to join the board, highlighting the strong leadership of CEO Penny Seater and the chapter’s reputation for excellence. “The organization has great leadership under Penny, and the board members are united and ready to grow the chapter’s impact. I’m proud to be part of this team and contribute to such meaningful work,” she said.

WOMEN BUILD: EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES

Since its inception in 1991, Habitat’s Women Build program has united volunteers from all walks of life to create stronger, safer communities. These builds provide a space where women—and anyone interested—can learn construction skills while actively addressing the housing crisis. Women Build events also shine a spotlight on the critical need for affordable housing, particularly for women and children, who are disproportionately affected by poor living conditions.

Over the years, the Seminole County and Greater Apopka chapter has made remarkable contributions to the community. Recognized for its innovative approaches and impactful projects, the chapter has earned awards for excellence in community service and housing development. Their Women Build teams have consistently set high standards, fostering a spirit of collaboration and empowerment.

Shanda herself is no stranger to the hands-on nature of Habitat’s builds. “I really enjoyed putting up the roofing one year,” she said. “It got hot up there, but it was so rewarding to see the progress! When you get the opportunity to meet the homeowners, hearing their stories and excitement for their new homes makes it all worthwhile.”

KICKING OFF THE 2025 SEASON

FINFROCK will kick off its 2025 Women Build fundraising season with an employee Galentine’s Breakfast on February 13th. This year, the company aims to raise $20,000 for the Seminole County and Greater Apopka chapter and one day plans to expand its efforts to include two Women Build teams.

Shanda is hopeful that this initiative will not only support Habitat’s mission but also inspire more women to explore careers in the construction industry. “I want women who participate to see the opportunities their skills can unlock—whether that’s at FINFROCK or within the trades in general. Habitat builds not just homes but also confidence and new possibilities.”
